‘The Wiz’ and the Power of Perseverance

January 24, 2018

The historic Ford’s Theatre, site of President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, honors Lincoln’s love of the performing arts by presenting live theater. Ford’s presents the Tony Award-winning musical The Wiz, March 9—May 12, 2018.

In this soul-infused adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s magical book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Dorothy is whisked away by a tornado to the fanciful land of Oz. Along the way, she and her sidekicks encounter Munchkins, flying monkeys and a power-hungry witch named Evillene, who vows to destroy them.

Ines Nassara, who stars as Dorothy, explains why she’s excited to take on the role.

“Dorothy perseveres. She has a great sense of believing and persistence throughout the show. Dorothy can admit that it’s difficult, but her positive light gets her friends to Oz and helps them believe in all that they already are. It’s important for kids to learn to believe in themselves, no matter how large the impediment.”

Winner of seven Tony Awards—including “Best Musical” and “Best Original Score”—The Wiz is a musical feast featuring soul, gospel, R&B and pop.

Introduce your students to this classic American musical in a historic theater unlike any other.
