✓ A Simple Sustainability Checklist for Event Attendees
Attending industry events is one of the best parts of what we do, learning, connecting, and (let’s be honest) collecting a little too much swag along the way. The good news? Being a more responsible attendee doesn’t require a complete overhaul. A few small, intentional choices before, during, and after an event can make a meaningful difference.
This isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being a little more thoughtful each step of the way.
Pre-Event
-
- Pack a reusable water bottle and coffee cup
- Bring a tote bag for materials
- Go digital first (download agendas, save QR codes, skip printouts)
- Plan your transportation (walk, public transit, or carpool when possible)
- Pack light and include any helpful reusables (utensils, containers, snacks)
- Prepare of a list of questions for potential suppliers/buyers about their responsible travel initiatives
During the Event
-
- Refill your bottle instead of using single-use plastics
- Skip the swag you don’t need
- Use event apps or QR codes instead of printed materials
- Be mindful at meals, take only what you’ll eat
- Recycle and compost where available
- Turn off lights/AC in your hotel room when you leave
- Walk or share rides to and from the venue/airport when you can
- Ask the responsible travel questions you prepared during your meetings
Post-Event
-
- Recycle or reuse materials you brought home
- Reflect on what worked? What will you do again next time?
- Share what you learned with your team, community and SYTA
- Support businesses and partners prioritizing sustainability
