Council of School Attorneys Meeting

Jeff Ment, Managing Partner, Ment Law Group and SYTA partner, recently attended the 2022 Council of School Attorneys (COSA) meeting in San Diego. “COSA supports 3,000 attorneys representing K-12 public school districts and state school boards associations. The work of the Council is widely respected and a resource for school board attorneys and state association counsel across the country.” COSA works directly with the National School Board Association (NSBA).

Topics of the meeting focused on:

First Amendment rights of students and staff
Violence at schools
COVID-related issues
Superintendent concerns
Gender issues

Although there were no sessions related directly to travel or school trips, Jeff was able to speak with and establish many contacts that should be helpful to SYTA’s goal of establishing a partnership with COSA and the NSBA. We will continue our efforts to develop relationships that support educational travel and provide a dialogue to discuss risk and legal concerns that may impact administrator and school board approval.
