Learning from Musical Masters

July 15, 2019

No visit to Boston is complete without experiencing the legendary Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops, two of America’s most exciting and respected ensembles!

Led by Music Director Andris Nelsons, the Boston Symphony Orchestra performs a wide range of classical music, from Mozart and Beethoven to Shostakovich and Ives, from grand opera to intimate chamber music, from the cornerstones of the orchestral repertoire to intriguing new scores. In the spring, Boston Pops Orchestra features its signature light classical offerings along with music from Broadway, film, big band, the American songbook and more—all in a festive cabaret-style atmosphere.

Both orchestras perform in historic Symphony Hall, a Boston landmark renowned for its perfect acoustics. Groups enjoy discounted rates, advanced seating, flexible payment options, no additional fees, and—when available—the ability to add a Symphony Hall tour and customized experiences through the Working with the Masters program.

The Working with the Masters program provides the exciting opportunity for students to interact with BSO and Boston Pops musicians, associated artists, or staff members in Visiting Ensemble Master Classes or Educational Workshops.

Visiting Ensemble Master Classes provide musical groups the chance to perform a few selections for, and receive personalized feedback from, a seasoned BSO or Boston Pops musician. These musicians provide their professional expertise, leaving the ensembles and their directors with an invigorated and renewed sense of how to play their prepared musical selections.

Educational Workshops enlighten groups of all ages, backgrounds, and interests with a behind-the-scenes discussion and Q&A on a variety of topics from one of the Orchestra’s musicians, associated artists, or staff members. These customized forums pair perfectly with tickets to a performance and prompt groups to dive further into a topic of mutual interest or connect with their peers in a new way. Make Symphony Hall your next classroom and create a lasting memorable experience with one of these intriguing classes, exclusive to group ticket buyers!

“Our experience was truly outstanding. Having the chance to make music on stage at Symphony Hall was a wonderful life experience for the students,” said Scott Hensil, Orchestra Director, Central Bucks South & West High Schools in Pennsylvania. “To see the level of appreciation in the eyes of the students as we walked on stage and looked around us was very special. Their smiles went on forever!”

Hensil added that as his students enjoyed the experience because of the power of the musical experience and not because they “won a trophy” speaks a great deal to the benefit and power of the master class.
