Immersive History at Perry Education Days

Did you know your students can visit an island, a national park, and the third-tallest national monument…all without leaving Ohio? Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial at Put-in-Bay, part of Shores & Islands Ohio, offers educational opportunities for student groups focused on the War of 1812, the Battle of Lake Erie, and 19th century life. Each spring they host Perry Education Days, offering students the opportunity to participate in Ranger programs, artillery demonstrations, historical presentations, and visits to the observation deck 317 feet above Lake Erie. After your park tour, visit other island sites such a Perry’s Cave and the Butterfly House via the Put-in-Bay Tour Train. Include a meal at one of the many group-friendly restaurants.

Education Days at Cedar Point Amusement Park

Sure, an amusement park sounds like an exciting idea for a class trip! But what if you could have a fun day and still meet learning objectives and state-approved curriculum standards while getting outside of the classroom? Enter Cedar Point’s Education Days and Performance Opportunities. Just before the end of the school year and shortly after the park opens for the season each May, Cedar Point offers a slate of specially-scheduled days offering different learning experiences such as Physics, Math & Science Days, Engineering Day, and Amusement Park 101. Let Cedar Point be a classroom unlike any others and plan your student visit. Are you a band or choir director? Cedar Point also offers performance opportunities so you can pair a day of fun with the ability to show off everything you’ve learned musically over the past year. Performance groups can choose between in-park performances such as marching down the midway or singing on stage, or visit for the annual Festival of Music which includes an adjudicator evaluation and awards for musical groups from elementary through senior high school. Catered group meal options are included in your special day.

Code Name Hope – Sandusky Underground Railroad Tour

Student groups visiting Shores & Islands Ohio are often interested in historically-themed itineraries, with group-appropriate stops and tours. Did you know Sandusky, Ohio has numerous ties to the Underground Railroad movement? The term, Underground Railroad, refers to the network of people and locations where enslaved people seeking freedom could find safe haven during the mid-19th century. The city of Sandusky has many private homes and businesses that were considered safe houses and citizens who were vital to the movement. Sandusky was a major terminal and was known by the code name, “Hope.” Those seeking freedom came through the area in order to reach Sandusky Bay where they hoped for passage across Lake Erie into Canada. Shores & Islands Ohio offers an Underground Railroad group itinerary which includes stops at two relevant museums, the Maritime Museum of Sandusky and the Follett House Museum. Downtown Sandusky also offers a wide variety of dining options for groups to select from, from sit-down to fast-casual and even outdoor picnic options.
