An Exclusive Interview with Radio City Rockette Brittany Paige Snyder
It’s officially the start of the holiday season! Nothing says holidays in New York City more than the Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes. This joyful, one-of-a-kind holiday celebration brings together family, friends and loved ones. The legendary Rockettes dazzle crowds at this annual event, with brilliant dance numbers and show-stopping routines.
Broadway Inbound had the opportunity to speak with one of the lovely and talented ladies of the Rockettes, Brittany Paige Snyder, about life as a Rockette and what’s in store for audiences this year.
Where did you grow up and where do you live now?
I grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana, and now I live in Manhattan.
When did you make the big move to NYC?
I came to New York City in 2008. I had been in and out for a while; it really depended on where the job was. But growing up, I would watch the Rockettes on television performing at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. I always wanted to be a Rockette. In 2009, I got to make my dream a reality! I’m currently in my 8th season with the Rockettes.
When did you start dancing?
I started dancing when I was three years old, and I just never stopped. I started because my older sister started and of course I had to copy her. My sister didn’t take to it, but I LOVED it.
Do you have a favorite style of dance?
I love all styles, and being able to do all styles of dance has paid off for me. For the Rockettes, you need to be proficient in Jazz, Tap and Ballet.
What does your average day look like?
I’m currently working six days a week, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. with a lunch break in the middle. We’re learning numbers and cleaning them, and then we’ll move over to Radio City to do tech and get everything set on the stage. This year, they have all new technology for Radio City. It’s immersive, so no matter where you’re sitting, you’re going to have an amazing experience.
What’s your favorite holiday tradition?
My family and I do “Second Christmas,” where my mom leaves all the decorations and everything up in Indianapolis and recreates Christmas for me. It’s exactly like Christmas Day, and my nieces and nephews love it because they get a second Christmas too!
Do you have a favorite Rockette costume?
I love the beautiful Swarovski crystal costumes; it’s like dripping in diamonds. But I get chills wearing the wooden soldier costume. It’s so iconic; it’s what most people think of when they think of the Rockettes. Getting to put that costume on is such an honor.
What would you suggest a visitor to NYC do with their time?
Well of course, you gotta see the Rockettes! If they’re a fan of sweets, then Levain Bakery is a must. I use to live above the bakery and it smelled a-maz-ing!
Thanks to Brittany for taking time out of her hectic schedule to talk to us. We also learned that the Rockettes have amazing experiences that will bring you up close and personal to the action!
