Go Off the Beaten Path in NYC

Looking for in-person and virtual opportunities to show your students the hidden history of New York City, while also immersing yourselves in the vibrant and diverse neighborhoods found in the Big Apple? Inside Out Tours is likely to have just the thing.

Founded by two native New Yorkers, Inside Out Tours seeks to tell diverse stories of people who have made a difference in New York City history and believe in using tourism to empower communities and preserve their cultural traditions and historical sights.

On their tours, students don’t simply observe from a distance—rather they get to taste regional food, listen to gospel music, view street art, visit famous landmarks, and more.

In addition to the classic New York sights, tours focusing on history and social justice are available, taking students on a journey that follows the Freedom Trail in New York. They’ll learn about the revolts and dramatic escapes that occurred during the era of American slavery, all while visiting historic sites including memorials and a former station that was part of the Underground Railroad.

Music also comes alive with a Harlem Gospel Experience, a neighborhood tour of the cultural capital of Black America. Students will have an opportunity to experience the soulful sounds of gospel music and the notable streets and theaters frequented by greats like Billie Holiday.

A bonus: Multilingual tour guides ensure tour experiences are inclusive and fun for all students.

Not ready to visit the city in-person just yet? There are plenty of virtual tours to keep the educational benefits of travel alive—right in the classroom. From the Statue of Liberty to Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan to discovering the mysteries and beauty of 20th-century American architecture in Midtown, there’s plenty to learn from and explore.
